June to October is dry and reliable on both the island and the mainland — and also the busiest and most expensive. January and February are hot, clear and quieter, and it is calving season in the southern Serengeti. April and May bring the long rains: greenest country, fewest visitors, lowest prices, but some camps close.
Most nationalities do, and Zanzibar counts as Tanzania for this. Applying online in advance through the official immigration portal is cheaper and faster than the airport queue. Rules change, so check with your own embassy before you fly.
Day excursions in cash or mobile money on the day. Safaris take a 30% deposit to hold vehicles, permits and camps, with the balance 30 days before arrival. Every payment gets a written receipt.
Neutral colours, long sleeves for the evening, and a warm layer for the crater rim — it is genuinely cold at dawn at 2,300 metres. Light aircraft take a soft bag with a 15 kg limit, so pack a duffel rather than a hard case.

Tanzania is a malaria area, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from a country where it is present. Speak to a travel clinic at home four to six weeks before flying — we are not medically qualified and will not advise beyond that.
